Laser Hair Removal with Tattoos: What to Confirm Before Booking

Progen AestheticsPublished

Information to help you prepare questions. Treatment suitability, risks and aftercare are assessed individually with the clinic.

Laser hair removal should avoid tattooed skin. Having a tattoo does not automatically settle whether nearby skin can be treated: the practitioner needs to assess the area and explain what would be excluded before you book a course.

Tattoo ink can absorb light intended for hair removal, creating risks including burns, pigment changes, scarring and changes to the tattoo. The European Society for Laser Dermatology's published safety guidance advises avoiding hair-removal treatment on tattooed skin. Read the guidance on hair removal and tattoos.

Agree the treatment area before agreeing the course

A request such as “both lower legs” describes your goal, but it does not establish which skin is suitable for treatment. If a tattoo falls within that area, ask the practitioner to show you the proposed boundaries.

Use these questions during consultation:

  • Which skin would be treated? Ask to see the proposed area rather than relying on the appointment label.
  • Which skin would remain untreated? Include the tattoo and any surrounding area the practitioner needs to exclude.
  • What does that mean for my goal? Discuss whether leaving hair in those areas would still give you a result you would value.
  • What am I paying for? Confirm how exclusions affect the quoted coverage before purchasing a course.
  • What should I do about hair in the excluded area? Request individual advice that fits your skin and the preparation instructions for nearby treatment.

For example, if you want lower-leg treatment and have an ankle tattoo, ask the practitioner to explain the proposed boundary around that design. Do not assume that buying lower-leg treatment includes passing the laser over every part of the leg.

A healed tattoo still needs to be identified

An old tattoo should still be pointed out during assessment. Healing does not remove the ink from the skin. A published case report describes scarring and fading after hair-removal treatment over a tattoo that had been applied years earlier. It demonstrates a possible complication, rather than telling us how frequently it occurs. Read the clinical case report.

Mention decorative tattoos, cosmetic tattoos and medical micropigmentation where relevant. University Hospital Southampton specifically advises patients with nipple and areola micropigmentation to avoid laser treatments on that tattooed area because the pigment can change colour. Read the NHS micropigmentation advice.

Ask for the boundary that applies to your assessment

A distance or covering technique described by another clinic is not an individual treatment plan. Ask your practitioner how the tattoo will be excluded and whether enough suitable surrounding skin remains to make treatment worthwhile. This article does not specify a protective covering or a universal clearance distance.

If your main concern is hair growing directly through the tattoo, explain that at the outset. Ask about appropriate options for that particular area rather than assuming a laser course will address it.

Bring the coverage question to consultation

For an appointment enquiry in Bournemouth, ask Progen about a laser hair removal consultation. Explain that a tattoo lies within the area you would like assessed. Keep initial messages general; the clinic's contact page advises asking how to share sensitive information appropriately before sending medical details or photographs.

Frequently asked questions

Can I use a home IPL device over the tattoo instead?

Do not use home IPL as a workaround over tattooed skin. Philips states that Lumea is unsuitable for use on tattoos. Follow the instructions and exclusions for your exact device; suitability elsewhere on the body does not establish suitability over tattoo ink.
